Goal of the Term Paper:
This assignment is the capstone task for the How Things Work
course. While the goals and expectations for the assignment are outlined
at length in the term paper instructions,
here is an alternative statement of my goals:
This paper is a research project in
which you should examine the physics within an object or situation that
has meaning for you in order to gain experience at:
- finding the physics concepts that
make objects or situations possible,
- seeing the roles of physics in ordinary
life,
- uncovering the variety of physics
that can be found contributing to even seemingly narrowly defined
cases,
- distinguishing between physics,
science, engineering, history, and aesthetics,
- seeing how different people examine
and discuss physics, science, engineering, history, and aesthetics
in whatever they are examining,
- distinguishing between valid physical
or scientific analysis and mere speculation or meaningless scientific
mumbo-jumbo,
- observing how people conduct physical
and scientific research,
- using reference sources, including
books, journals, and electronic media, thoughtfully, skeptically,
accurately, and ethically.

| You MUST
submit your term paper as a Microsoft Word document. If you use
another word processor to prepare your paper, save a copy of the final
draft in Microsoft Word format. To do this, choose "save as" and change
the file type to "Word." Use the most modern version of Word offered to
you. Also, be sure to name the new file something different in case there
is a problem with the conversion--don't destroy your original! If you
have questions about how to convert formats, please contact the instructor
or the TA for help. Before you
submit your paper, please make sure that you have done everything on
this check list:
- Put your name(s) on the first page
of the word-processor document itself.
- Make sure that all
pictures are embedded in the document, not just linked to image
files elsewhere on your computer disks. Linked images won't appear
in our copy of your document because we won't get those other files.
- Make sure that you have cited
your sources throughout your paper, using a commonly accepted
citation format, and that your works cited list
and/or bibliography appears at the end of your word-processor
document. These lists should include all
the sources you used, including web sites and people.
- Make sure that the final submission
file containing your paper is in Microsoft Word
format.
- Make sure that you submit
the correct document file.
After you submit your document, you will
receive an email receipt. Check that receipt to be sure that your document
was received properly and that you sent the correct document. Report any
problems immediately.
